We are the local defenders of freedom in SUNY New Paltz. We are on the front lines of the great clash between contemporary and classic liberalism. Stay informed about our latest plans, join the New Paltz College Libertarians facebook group.

[edit] General Information

We are an official campus organization that seeks to promote education about a libertarian alternative to the bipartisan monopoly model that has dominated the American political spectrum, through social networking, literature, events and lectures.

[edit] Weekly Gatherings

During the Fall 2008 semester, we will be meeting in SUB 409 every Thursday evening at 9:00 p.m. and will enjoy food, movies, debates, and discuss plans for the club. Afterwards we welcome all attendees to party libertarian-style in someone’s off-campus private property, where we can celebrate our freedom before, perhaps, hitting the bars.

[edit] Our Philosophy: Classic Liberalism in a Nutshell

Libertarianism, or Classic Liberalism, is a philosophy of liberty based on allowing the individual to do whatever he wants so long as other people’s freedom is respected. Libertarians equate freedom with the concept of self-ownership, and ownership of the fruit of one’s labor. Libertarianism combines what is now known as social liberalism (more personal freedom) with economic conservatism (less government taxing and spending) to promote free minds and free markets, with the ultimate goal of minimizing the size and scope of the government as an intrusive force in our lives. [edit] Role of Government

The essential role of government in our lives need be simple and limited:

  • Protection from violence (domestic and from abroad) thereby protecting Life
  • Protection from enslavement thereby protecting Liberty
  • Protection from theft thereby protecting private Property
  • Arbiter in contractual disputes.

…most other services should be avoided by the state if possible, and be left to the responsibility of the individual.

[edit] Stances on Issues

Libertarians tend to embrace individual responsibility (thereby rejecting most government welfare and affirmative action), promote private charity, tolerate diverse lifestyles, support the free market and legal immigration, and defend civil liberties including gun ownership and abortion rights, but they oppose most government bureaucracy and taxes, drug prohibition, aggressive (non-defensive) wars and corporate subsidies.

[edit] Our Goals: Fall 2008 Semester Planned Events

We plan on attending several conferences, put on several events and public lectures. We are also planning a Liberty Week full of engaging events. Please check back soon! Contact

We hope to work closely with the Political Science club this year to have public debates on specific political issues with organizations including: the New Paltz College Republicans, Students for a Democratic Society, NYPIRG, Synthesis, the Human Rights club, Democracy Matters, and whoever else is interest in debate.
